Unrequited Love

Just a drop in the ocean is him,
A frail little bird that just lost its wing
And his understanding of things is slim
He would not be an attractive gold ring
his lanky arms do not lift my spirits
He has the face of an unknown creature
He knows not the language of love, esprit
Yet I adore his every bland feature
To his personality I am keen
Yet he does not see what is before him
A beautiful girl, waiting to be seen
He lives a life that is really quite grim
I have always been here for all this time,
He’s not my prince, a princess am not I

Thursday, December 4 - Unrequited Love

He was staring at me again. He looked away quickly every time I turned my head, but I saw. It was really getting on my nerves. Why couldn't he take a hint?
"So this girl in my class was talking about you," I said, before taking a sip of my usual order at our coffee shop.
"Oh, really," He said uninterestedly, jotting down some notes in his biology notebook. "Hey, would you want to go out sometime?" He asked innocently, as if this was a normal thing for friends to ask.
"No, and you really need to stop asking me, the answer will always be no," I said forcefully, sick of having to do this now.
"Geez, chill, it was just a question," He said playfully, trying to shrug off his failed attempt at getting me to go out with him.
I was ending this now, "No, it was not just a question, it was more than that. You can't get over me. Ever since eighth grade you have constantly stared at me and pestered me into going on a date with you, but the answer is no, because I don't like you." I said, spouting out everything I had wanted to say for the past four years. He stared at me with a hurt look in his eyes. He did not say anything for a while, but finally said okay. Just okay. I was expecting more from him, but I remembered that he was always really annoying like that. I picked up my backpack and left, leaving a big part of my life on the table, with a broken heart.

Tuesday, November 18 - Treason and Historical Fiction

Theodore Roosevelt sitting in his car,
Waving to the crowd,
Not getting very far,
Before his assassin shoots a round.
Blocked by his lengthy speech,
And metal eyeglass case,
The bullet never breached
His chest or his face
Roosevelt however,
Was determined to speak.
This event will be remembered forever,
The president who was not weak.

Monday, November 17 - Found Poem

Found Poem

Distractedly waiting,
She surveyed the door.
Having just run the marathon,
She could barely stand anymore

In this heat, running was exhausting
She propped herself up with an elbow,
Everyone chose to ignore her,
A miserable, heartbroken girl they did not know.

With a swell of relief,
The door opened then shut,
But it was not him and she was shaken,
Dazed by the fact that he did not show up.

With wobbly legs she stood up,
And then wearily sighed,
A sweating cup of iced tea in each hand,
She trudged home with tired eyes.

Thursday, November 13 - The Macabre Arts

The Underworld was nothing like I expected it to be. Narrow tunnels similar to what sewage systems looked like and little areas of light on the ceiling, so that we could see into Heaven. The thought of looking at the good people of the afterlife disgusted me. However, Everyone crowded around these tiny lights like flies. There was pushing, shoving, and the breaking of bones. Malnourished skeletons staining for a glimpse of what could have been. I don't really care about seeing into Heaven. I've always known I would never make it there. The Underworld, however, is terrible. New arrivals are to stay in the first level for a century, feeling the worst form of torture, regret. After that, they were admitted into the real underworld, where tortures both man-made and mythical were waiting for us. I couldn't wait. While all of the crazed skeletons murdered for a glimpse into Heaven, I just sat, and waited.

Wednesday, November 12 - The Haunted House

I was just getting up to go to the bathroom during a break in the monster movie marathon, when I heard a strange laughter coming from above. Now, I had been warned by the real estate agent that people in this house often heard strange things, so I wasn't too concerned about the noise. I headed to the kitchen to make myself a sandwich when I heard the noise again. This time, it was closer. Nervous, I looked around and made my way upstairs to retrieve my gun. By now, the laughter was ear-splitting and sounded like a chorus of witches, cackling at their latest victim. I was determined not to be bothered by the continuous laughter and convinced myself that it would die down soon. With my gun in a firm grip, I walked slowly to the stairs, conscious of the never ending laughing screams. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a white mist trailing the floor. Knowing that was never supposed to happen, I shot at the floor, in hopes of scaring this mist creature away. The mist only grew, creating the most devilish looking monster you could ever imagine. I stumbled back, composed myself, and shot at the looming figure. It's teeth gnashed, its form convulsed, but it did not seem to be affected by my bullets. I kept shooting though, not knowing what else to do. The creature advanced towards me, mysteriously evading my bullets and growing even larger. I was sure my neighbors had heard all of the noise and were on there way, but I wasn't sure if they would come fast enough. The monster stepped through me and became my shadow, it changed from a wispy white to a sharp, cold, black. I glared at the shadow on the wall and shot. A piercing pain charged through my heart, and I collapsed. Moments later, the cold black monster came out of my body along with my soul. It looked scared, but it did not look like me. It's teeth were sharpened to a point like the monster's and it appeared to have lost some human features. The dark monster drew me away, to the attic where they lure their prey. I would live out the rest of my days as a laughing beast.

Friday, November 7 - Eww, That's Creepy!

A row of women accused of Witchcraft hang
Over the growing crowd.
When all of a sudden, no one could see,
The women hidden by a shroud.
The mysterious veil prompted many cries,
As people struggled to see
The women who's lives were cruelly taken,
Who had pleaded and begged for mercy.
All of a sudden a cry rang out,
From somewhere near the ropes,
A cry that echoed throughout the town,
Devoid of humor and hope.
In cruel curiosity,
The crowd surged forward,
Straining to see the cause for alarm,
And when they saw it, they were floored.
Where the witches should be,
There was now only air,
The women had escaped,
A chill ran through the entire square.

Thursday, October 21 - Deja Vu

Caroline studied the old man carefully. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but something about him reminded her of someone else. But who? Caroline impatiently waited for her order to be ready as she speculated his identity. When her coffee was ready she sat down at a table next to the old man. The man was intently doing a crossword puzzle in the newspaper. Caroline did not want to bother him, so she just stared at him instead. He finally looked up from his puzzle and at first didn't notice Caroline. When he finally did, however, his entire face changed from confusion to happiness.
"Sarah?" The man asked in a soft voice. Now Caroline was confused, because she didn't know a Sarah.
"I'm sorry, sir, I think you have the wrong person," Caroline said awkwardly. The man still looked at her with a huge grin on his face.
"Hold on," the man said as he shuffled around in his pocket. Then he pulled out his wallet and started to look through that. I was starting to question if knowing who this man was really worth it. As I started to stand, he pulled out a folded picture. "Found it!" He said excitedly. He held it out for me to open. Hesitantly, I opened the picture, and there I was, as a little girl, sitting on an adult man's lap. It took me a minute, but when I finally realized what the picture meant, I stared at the man, waiting for an explanation.
He sighed, "When you were three years old, you walked away at a grocery store and you never came back," he said, getting emotional. "We thought we had lost you forever, We figured you had been kidnapped, but we never knew for sure." He looked at me with tears in his eyes, "Please come home, Sarah."
I looked back into those eyes that matched mine and just barely choked out, "Of course, Grandpa."

Thursday, October 16 - RAIN

It is day 345 of the rain. Most of the earth has flooded, and the remaining land that is not submerged in water is submerged in people. There is no room to even move in the house I am staying in. Supplies are dwindling and the rain is showing no signs of stopping. The tarp I am covered with is old and smells like mildew. Wind beats against the flag of America that we hung up, if only to give us a sense of hope. The mountain we are on is getting filthy, and the water levels keep rising. I don't know what we are going to do. The ceremonial rain dance is being performed right now, and I am working on preparations for the one year anniversary of the flood. I am making the rainbow costumes for everyone. It's just a way to pass the time. The idea was brought up by the person we elected chief, because he could see that our spirit was vanishing. I don't care, as long as I have something to do, I'm happy. There have been a few people to go crazy in our colony, and they had to be drowned. Maybe this eternal storm will end, and maybe it won't. I just keep hoping for a rainbow.

Wednesday, October 15 - I remember when...

I remember when I used to erupt,
   A million sparks shooting up,
   Over the ocean,
   Across the sky,
   Scorching the heavens,
But I was just passing time,
   Waiting for another,
   Just like me.
   But there wasn't another volcano,
Not as far as the eye could see.
   Until one day,
   Impossibly far away,
I saw a gleam in the air,
That could have only meant one thing.
   So I waited and waited,
   Until I decided to sing,
   "I have a dream,
   I hope will come true,
   That your here with me,
   And I'm here with you,
I wish that the earth and  the skies up above,
Would send me someone to lava"
   So I waited some more,
   Until she could respond,
With her own version of love,
Using the words of her own song,
   "I had a dream,
   I know will be heard,
   By those up above,
   From us here on earth,
I wish that our distance was not quite so far,
To get to my someone to lava."
I was touched by her words,
And wanted to spend eternity with her,
   Yet we kept moving,
At a rate that was getting slower and slower.
   Finally, years and years later,
   We met face to face,
Her beautiful edges, points, and sparks,
All of my plans fell into place.
   We lived happy together,
   Forever and ever,
   Sharing the sea,
   And smiling at everything.

Tuesday, October 7 - The Flip Side

It was too hard to breathe,
It was too hard to see,
After losing the championship,
Oh, Woe is me!

I practiced for years,
Through blood, sweat, and tears,
I had dedicated my life to this sport.
Why am I even standing here,
In second place,
With a frown on my face,
I just don't understand,
Why I tried so hard to land
That cartwheel in the air,
Quadruple handstand.

What am I going to do now,
My entire life is crashing down,
That girl at the top of the podium is so lucky,
It's such a shame that she looks like a cow.

It is too hard to breathe,
It is too hard to see,
A million camera flashes,
Are pointed at me,

I practiced for years,
and faced my fears,
Until at last I could land,
The quintuple trifecta split stand.
With a smile on my face,
I stand in first place,
waving to the crowd,
Whose cheering is deafeningly loud

The girl in second place looks so sad,
I wish I could help her,
She storms away mad,
Which I don't see why considering she just scored three points under.

Monday, October 6 - Persona Poem

   Taylor Swift

I wake up with a cat on my nose.
It is way too early.
I don't have time for anything,
I just put on a blanket and go
To the airport
With my coffee in tow.
This is my life,
Waking up before the sun
In order to make music for my fans.
The release date
Is one month away
I hope they like it,
It is my favorite one
Like Ever.

Thursday, October 2 - The Frog Prince

Once upon a time in an abandoned swamp, a tearful princess was lamenting the fact that she was just average and that nobody wanted to marry her. Having been engaged three times before and left at the alter just as many, she was giving up hope that she would ever find a lover. The only thing the princess really wanted was a companion. Out of nowhere she heard a throaty voice ask if she was okay.
"Who said that?" The princess asked, looking around and straightening her hair so that she wouldn't look like a mess if the strange voice happened to be a suitor. A frog jumped on a lily pad not far away. She called out, "Hello?" hoping she hadn't scared off the suitor.
"Yes hello there, why are you crying?" The frog asked earnestly. Dumbfounded, the princess backed away, thinking she was delusional. "No, don't leave me, I'm merely a cursed prince, I haven't had a companion in so long, please sit," The frog motioned to the ground beside the lily pad. Sympathizing with the frog, the princess sat down and stared at the frog expectantly. "Hello princess, I have been waiting for a beautiful stranger such as your self to show up for many the year. You have no idea how lonely it has been in this swamp since being cursed." The frog spoke, with his eyes staring at a space in the distance.
The princess's heart went out to the frog prince's pitiful existence. "Whatever you need me to do, I will do it, nobody deserves to be alone forever."
"Thank you my dear, together we can rule the world and I will never leave you once you perform this one simple request." The frog said.
   "Anything,"
The frog rubbed his hands together excitedly "Okay so this is what I need you to do," he then proceeded to tell the princess what he needed from her. The princess was dubious of his list of needs but a promise was a promise. She left right then, saying that she would be back at the first light of the new day. The frog waited impatiently while the princess was collecting his items. He was so excited he could barely breathe.
The princess gathered up the items that the frog had asked for very carefully, and very fast. She just hoped that she hadn't forgotten something. When she returned to the frog, he hopped around gleefully.
"Yippee! I will finally be able to walk again!" the prince croaked out. "Now I need you to place all of the items around me in a circle." The princess then went about placing the items around an excited frog prince. She placed the silver spoon to the north of the frog, the diamond ring at the south, the platinum plate to the east, and finally the emerald dragon's egg at the west. The frog smiled as the magic started to transform him. He suddenly realized something that the princess had not retrieved for him. "What about the golden ba-" he was cut off as his entire body was engulfed in pixiedust. When the smoke had finally cleared, the princess did not see a handsome price standing in front of her, but an orange and white cat, mewing grumpily. She walked over to the cat, picked it up, and hugged it so hard, it could barely breathe.
"Now you can never leave me!" the princess exclaimed happily, "I went to a witch to ask about your items, and she suggested that if I wanted eternal love, I would have to leave out the golden ball from the spell. So I did!" The princess giggled. "And we will live happily ever after!" She skipped all of the way back to the kingdom to alert her parents to call off the husband search, for she had found her soulmate.

Wednesday, October 1 - Fairy Tale Characters

Cinderella

Born with a spark,
And cleaning away,
Sits a young Cinderella,
Cursing the day,
That her father died,
And left her to this hag,
A life sentenced to suffering
And listening to her two step-nags.

She wishes for hope,
She dreams for love,
That one day a fairy
Will be sent from above.
With the help of the mice,
She prepares for the ball,
That her stepmother accepted,
So long as she does her chores, not one but all.

Without a dress to wear,
Cinderella gains the help of the mice
Who love Cinderella,
And make a dress that is just right.
But her sisters were angry,
They said it just wasn't fair,
How Cinderella got to go to the ball,
She didn't deserve to be there

They tore it to shreds,
To every last bit,
Until Cinderella
Nearly pitched a fit.
 In a tearful state,
Cinderella runs away,
But is stopped by a fairy,
Who is there just like fate.

With a flick of her wrist,
And a bop and a boo,
Cinderella transforms
Into a beautiful new
Princess who is worthy
Of meeting the prince
And at last has the chance
To get true loves first kiss.

Now at the ball,
Cinderella dances
With the prince of her dreams,
Thanking her lucky stars for second chances.
But the clock strikes midnight,
And not a moment too soon,
Cinderella is running away,
but she is missing a shoe.
She left it on the steps,
As she was making an escape,
So that the price wouldn't see her,
In a poor bedraggled state.

The prince has to find her,
so he starts a large search,
Hoping the shoe fits his maiden,
The one who left him in the lurch.
Finally the shoe arrives at a house,
With two ugly stepsisters,
But Cinderella is locked away,
The shoebearer may miss her!
With the help of the mice,
Cinderella is finally free,
She tries on the shoe,
And it fits perfectly.

They both shall live
Happily Ever After,
Cinderella and her prince,
A life full of happiness and laughter.

Thursday, September 25 - Bad Mistake

I still visit him sometimes. I go to the animal shelter and sit there for hours just petting him and brushing him. The day we gave him up was the worst day of my life. It will go down in history as the worst mistake I have ever made. My cat, Fluffles, was my best friend in the whole world. My mother, though, was deathly allergic to cats. She took allergy pills, but eventually, they stopped working. She was miserable all of the time. I tried to pick up every stray hair so that maybe she could handle the cat, but it didn't work. Two years after receiving Fluffles as a birthday present, I had to take him to the pound. We tried to find someone to adopt him so that we would know he was in good hands, but nobody wanted him. I tried everything from keeping him outside (which he did NOT like) and keeping him in my room (which I did not like).
As I placed him in his cage, I kissed his fuzzy head one last time and placed his favorite toy in with him. I just hoped that he got adopted soon and doesn't have to spend eternity in a cramped little cage. I sprinkled a few of his favorite treats into his cage and closed the door. I didn't look back because of the tears that were threatening to fall. If I could do it all over again, I would have found a way to keep him, no matter what the consequences. But I do not have that option. One day, when I went to the pound to keep Fluffles company, I noticed that his cage was empty. When I asked the lady at the front desk where he was, she said that a lovely couple had adopted him just that morning. With a heavy heart, I went back home and continued on with my life. While I was extremely happy Fluffles had been adopted, It still hurt to know that I could never see him again.

Wednesday, September 24 - Endearing Quality.

If I had to pick a personality trait of mine that I think makes me unique, it would be how I am always nice to people and that I am always optimistic. My friends have said that whenever they see me, I am always smiling, which is probably true. I think that is important to have a positive outlook on life. I do not like when others are unhappy, If I do see unhappy people, I usually try to make them feel better. I think everyone should try and be nice to people, even if it is just with the little things. Even the smallest gesture can improve someone's day.

Tuesday, September 23 - Strange Fruit

"If you look to your left you will see the world's most dangerous and delectable fruit in the world. The Dragon fruit!" The tour guide said with a strong Australian accent. "Legend says that long, long ago, this fruit fed the Greek gods, provided sustenance for starving travelers, and was created by the extinct dragons." All of the tourists on the bus nodded their heads and snapped some pictures. I couldn't believe it, were people actually buying this junk? "In the ancient times, this fruit was used as a healing balm, and it was said to provide eternal life to whoever ate it. Of course that was not true, but they believed it was." I rolled my eyes. "Documents of this fruit go as far back as the roman times, where it was recorded, 'this is the best thing I have tasted in my life; a fiery sweetness so strong, so light, it is as if I am walking on a storm cloud.' This was said by Socrates, who had a love for Dragon fruits so strong, that he tried to change the name of the fruit to his own. Obviously no one agreed." I couldn't take this any longer, even my parents were eating up his ridiculous stories like cake. "Though no one knows for sure, this fruit is said to have been around since the beginning of time, which makes complete sense because that is when the dragons were alive!" The tour guide said enthusiastically. "You can purchase the complete history of the Dragon fruit volume one from our gift shop if you would like. We also have a cd of songs that mention the Dragon fruit if you would like that as well. Thank you for attending Hawaii Tours and Co. We hope you had a wonderful time and we do hope that you consider signing up for other tours that we do, like the daily life of the beetle, or the volcanos from afar." The tour guide said with a smile as he ushered us all into the gift shop shack. "Bye bye now," he called cheerfully.
"Oh, honey, look at that Dragon fruit necklace, I must have it!" My mother exclaimed as she pushed her way through the crowded shack. My father rushed after her to make sure that she didn't buy the entire store. I just sat down and took a nap.

Monday, September 15 - What the Deuce?

I walked into the Museum and the first painting that caught my eye was this interesting piece by Marc Chegall. The scene includes what appears to be a bride, who looks as though made of porcelain, being carried or held by a man in blue. All while a band full of animals on the cello and piano play in the background. My guide informs me of the history of this painting. A long time ago, there were arranged marriages. This woman was sold by her father to a wealthy merchant that he had never met, her father just wanted the money. On the day of the wedding, her father and mother drove her out on carriage to the destination. When they arrived, the merchant was in mysterious blue robes and told the girl to come inside and change into the dress he had picked out for her. When she came out in an untraditional red dress and a long, flowing, white veil, she saw what had happened to her parents. They had been turned into a ram and a fish, and were playing wedding songs. The mysterious man saw her distress and urged her to dance with him. When she did not, the man (who was actually a wizard) turned her into a porcelain statue that one would see on a wedding cake, and danced the night away with her. The guide moves on with the rest of the tour group, but I just stand there captivated by the image. I don't know why people paint what they do, and the result can be weird or beautiful. But I do know that we have the ability to interpret paintings into whatever we think it means. And I think that is beautiful.

Thursday, September 11 - Music Critic

With a melancholy tune and a good beat, Foster the People's song, "Pumped up Kicks", is played on what seems to be repeat on all of the national radios. The message of the song is actually quite dark, as it implies a kid, probably a teen, finding his father's gun and threatening the other kids with it. I think that maybe this song is implying that all of the stress of being a teenager and the peer pressure they have to endure. Maybe the kid was forced to use his gun and smoke to be accepted. By mentioning the "pumped up kicks" the band probably refers to the cool kids who can afford more things and who make fun of others. This song can be seen as having rebellious connotations. The kid is so fed up with society and the kids at school, that he just does not really care anymore. This song has a really nice tune, and in the background of some parts of the song, you can hear whistling, which I think adds a nice touch. Overall, this song speaks to the new generation, as a song of rebellion and revenge.
